Letter-writing Campaign
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Imam Amir ul Mu'mineen Ali [a] said: "May Allah have mercy upon the person who services a right and removes a wrong, or refutes an injustice and establishes justice."
In the continued attempt to get Seyed Mousavi free, we have initiated a letter-writing campaign to senators and congresspersons. If you would like to join this effort, please keep in mind the following:
- Be polite! You are asking this person to do something for you, so be respectful in your language.
- Edit your letter. A well-written letter carries more weight. If you need help in editing, please email Zainab@hejrat.info.

Of Senator or Congressperson
Dear Senator _____ (or Congressperson ____):
I am writing to you about an issue, which deeply concerns me, and I hope that you will take the time to listen to my concerns. After the tragedy of September 11, the Muslims of this country are facing discrimination and persecution. Many people have been arrested for crimes not committed, and some of those people are serving time in prison while innocent. I personally know one such person. Mr. Seyed Mahmood Mousavi is the head of the Al-Nabi Mosque in Southern California, and he has spent many years working with great devotion to help raise the quality of life for all those around him. He was arrested last August for some crimes, which he did not commit, and has been held since that time at Metropolitan Detention Center, a federal prison in Los Angeles, CA. (Prisoner ID #45193112) (Case: USA v. Seyed Mahmood Mousavi, CR07-513)
His trial could be called nothing less than a terrible travesty of justice, for he was not given a chance to properly defend himself against these false charges. Mr. Mousavi was not allowed to make phone calls, so he was not able to actively participate in the preparation of his defense. The judge disallowed the witnesses that the defense wished to call, and disallowed all documents brought forth by the defense that could have proven his innocence. Despite the fact that the prosecution had a weak case, and despite the fact that their own witness testified that they had mistranslated the documents on which they had based these false charges, Mr. Mousavi was found guilty of all charges, and is now awaiting sentencing.
This issue effects not only Mr. Mousavi and his family personally, but me and all Muslims in the United States because we now must fear that we will be arrested for crimes we have not committed, be tried under unfair conditions, and imprisoned for years although innocent.
I am requesting that you personally look into this case, and that you use your influence to help free Mr. Mousavi from prison. In this country, we pride ourselves on freedom and justice. Yet justice is not being served by the continued imprisonment of an innocent man such as Mr. Mousavi.
The Muslim citizens of this country are a law-abiding group, and a valuable part of our communities and the country as a whole. We help vote people such as you into office, so we are expecting you to be considerate of the issues, which affect us. Please take this matter seriously; we certainly are.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
(Your Name)
